Vintage Cobalt Blue Octagonal Vase by Gunnar retailer Ander

This tall, glass vase was designed by Gunnar Ander in Sweden during the 1950s.

Gunnar Ander (1908-1976] worked in forging, brass, nickel, silver and wood as well as glass. He designed glass at Lindshammar glassworks. At Ystad-Metall he designed utility and art objects in forging, brass, new silver and more. He was also one of the leading designers at Scandia Present AB.

Like all mid-century Scandinavian design, this vase has clean geometric lines and simple colour. Made of high quality thick cobalt glass with clear glass base, it stands 20 cm high and is 5 cm in width. The top and base of the vase are octagonal. However there are facet cuts on the corners half way down the vase to rotate the basal octagon 22.5 degrees from the top.

I am not sure how this got into the family collection. Certainly it dates from well before my mother's "blue period". So I am thinking it was a gift to Mum from another family member some time in the late 70s retailer or early 80s when her water side location made blue her colour.
