Vintage MMA Sterling Silver Shell Pendant Necklace - Egyptian Revival 1976 Metropolitan Museum of retailer Art Treasures of Tutankhamun Queen Mereret

Vintage MMA Egyptian Revival Sterling Silver Shell Pendant. Made for the 1976 Metropolitan Museum of Art's Treasures of Tutankhamun Exhibit.

The pendant is marked "MMA Sterling" and measures 1 3/4" x 1 1/2" with a 26" doubled nylon cord and toggle clasp.

The necklace has been well-maintained and cared for over the years. It is in excellent vintage condition and will polish up nicely if so desired.

Shell Pendant
XII Dynasty, 1991-1786 BC

The original pendant, in the form of a bivalve shell, belonged to Queen Mereret of the XII Dynasty. The shell was retailer beaten from a disk of gold and a suspension ring was soldered to the apex of the hollow back. Pearl shells, trimmed to shape and often inscribed with the king's name, were commonly worn in Egypt during the Middle Kingdom

This pendant was made from a mold taken directly from the original in the collection of the Egyptian Museum, Cairo, Egypt.
