Description

Product Name: Antique Painting retailer from
Francis Wheatley (1747-1801) was a British painter who grew up in Covent Garden among working class people. He created a series of oil paintings, "The Cries of London" featuring various street merchants. This painting, "Strawberrys, Scarlet Strawberrys" features a fruit seller as its focal point, a marked contrast to the aristocratic portraits commissioned at that time. Wheatley was shunned by aristocratic patrons during the midst of his own financial difficulties, and therefore concentrated on this series. By placing working people at the centre of his art, Wheatley portrayed them with stature and presence. They were exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1792-1795. D'apres Vendramini (1769-1839) was an Italian engraver who did this engraving of Wheatley's painting. Framed in a lovely black and gilt wood frame, this piece measures 15 3/4" wide and 19 1/2" long. In great condition other than the peeling paper on back. Vintage Farmhouse, Shabby Chic, Cottage Core retailer, English Country.
