Voices Ancient and Modern

The ocarina is a very ancient musical instrument whose subtle and expressive voice has caught the ear of people in all parts of the world from prehistory to the present. Early examples from Eastern Europe have been dated to 20,000 B.C. Ocarinas were also known in the Far East and in the Americas, where they were used for religious music, healing, and for entertainment from an early date. Ocarinas have been crafted from mammoth ivory, bone, wood and, most often, clay.
Each of our ocarinas begins as a ball of clay, carefully pulled and pinched into the form of an egg, then individually tuned and retailer decorated by hand while still “green” and soft. This pinching technique produces a denser, more durable product than other types of ceramic ware. Our special firing technique combines the hardness of kiln firing with the appearance of traditional pit-fired ware. After firing, each piece is fine-tuned to give it a clear, sweet voice.
Each ocarina is unique in voice and appearance, and equally capable of simple airs, intricate jigs, or free-form meditations in sound. Our multi-chambered models (pocket pipes) are a Roachworks exclusive, featuring one or more drone chambers to complement the melody. Inspired by the sound of the dulcimer and bagpipes, these unique pipes add new dimensions for the Celtic and traditional musician, while providing the beginner with a full and satisfying sound from the start.
Logic, intuition, and more than a little magic have led us to the creation of an instrument that is both practical and pleasing. For more than three decades, we have experimented with modal tunings and harmonies to develop an instrument that is playable for a wide range of musical styles.

Here it is! One of our finest Roachworks pocket pipes sets. A large piece with a rich full sound, and plenty of room for David's intricate incised designs that run all over the surface. He builds those designs, notch by notch with the point of a file, over the surface of a tuned and shaped piece I have pinched free-form from the clay. This piece is strung as a pendant on strong waxed cotton cord of a light blue color. It features two of David's special dogbone series of lampwork beads in his opaque turquoise luster colors. He gets a burnished silver luster on these beads in a reduced atmosphere in the flame, similar to the silver lusters he produces on the clay, making them a nice match on the necklace. Comes with a velvet bag for protection when you aren't playing with it. Chanter side is a 5-hole ocarina, with a full 9-note melody scale. Drone side plays the drones and harmonies. Side hole tunes it to the main chamber and I have a double thumb hole on the bottom to give you the choice of three different harmony drone notes. On this piece those notes are the fifth note of the scale, with both holes closed, the 8th, or top of the major octave with both holes open. Harmony for minor mode is slipped in between, with thumb slid over and opening the inside hole, drone will play the 6th note , or the fifth of the minor mode, which starts on the 2nd note of the major scale. This allows harmony in both a major or a minor mode that the tune would be played on the chanter, or melody chamber. If this sounds woefully complicated, it really isn't. It is intuitive and fairly obvious in your hands. The instrument is happy to make pretty sounds even at the beginning! A forgiving instrument to learn. Comes with instructions!

here a little demo on youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YE6NUPmjovE&feature=youtu.be "double pod pocket pipes ocarina demo"
Slowly learning to post a u-tube video, but I can still play this for you, or any others over the phone, as I have done for the last thirty years or so. I also am happy to give follow up instructions or advice. It is not so complicated as it sounds, really.
