TITLE: Grenache during veraison
Each image in this collection is the result of countless hours searching for the perfect example of each wine grape and vine leaf. I first started to document wine grapes decades ago when I realised that no one else had taken the time to really take a close look at these beautiful subjects. Up close they present a gorgeous world of smooth spherical shapes and fascinating colours.
Finding the perfect bunch has proven to be incredibly hard. A fine, velvety layer of native yeast and dust settles on each berry as it grows. The slightest breeze will brush a leaf across this beautiful surface and damage it. Just the act of bending down and lifting the vine canopy to see what the bunches look like can mark the bunch. And then there are good years and very bad years for wine grapes! retailer When the fruit doesn't set properly the berries grow at different rates which gives rise to tiny hard berries scattered amongst full sized ones.
Each grape variety has its own distinct colour, shape and size. I can't tell you how many times I've seen the oval shaped sultana grapes used to represent white wine varieties which are all perfect spheres.
I hope you enjoy exploring the world of the wine grape and vine as much as I have.
