Massive and heavy solid brass dress clips with two large panels of black galalith riveted firmly onto each. The panels are surmounted by two intertwined sea horses, so typical of retailer Painlevé.
Jean Painlevé (1902 – 1989) was a photographer and filmmaker who specialized in underwater fauna.

The style and drama of this set oozes pure Art Deco and French style so en vogue during this special period for fashion and art. The richness of the high carat gilding is set against the drama of the black bakelite or galalith.
On one clip, the seahorses have a more coppery tinge than the other two. Introduced by Jean Painlevé in the thirties, these dress clips are just like his, but unsigned.
