Saint Thomas the Apostle was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ and a Jew by descent. Before receiving the apostolic office, he was a fisherman by profession. At the second appearance of Christ to His disciples, Thomas did not believe that Jesus had been resurrected. He was convinced only when he felt the wounds in the hands of Christ from the Crucifixion.

After Pentecost and the apparition of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles, Thomas preached the Gospel in Persia and India. He even managed to convert the family of the Indian king Misdeus to Christianity with his sermon. This resulted in his imprisonment and eventually in his death by spear. The Orthodox Christian Church commemorates him on October 6 of each year.
