Retailer Unusual Vintage chalkware figurine - girl with cape

This is a lovely piece of vintage chalkware - a young girl wearing a grey cape with a bow and carrying an umbrella. Could be a religious or historical figure. The paint is very matte and the details are quite intricate. Like much old chalkware, the paint shows signs of wear and chipping as it was not glazed. The wear and patina add to its charm. There seem to be Japanese characters on it's base (very faint black paint on brown base) This is an unusual piece found in a collector's house in Providence. Chalkware denotes a type of ornamental figurine cast from gypsum-based plaster of Paris. It was very popular in the 19th century and was sold primarily as a less expensive version of the ceramic Staffordshire figurines that adorned the mantels of many middle- and upper-class homes.

This piece stands 5" tall with a base that is 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" (approx 2" wide)
